What Do IP Ratings Mean for Industrial Lighting?

What Are IP Rating Codes?

The IEC has developed the ingress protection (IP) ratings, which grade the resistance of an enclosure against the intrusion of dust or liquids. Each rating has specific testing requirements to demonstrate conformity to the code and each IP code digit has a specific meaning.

First digit: Solid particle protection

The first digit indicates the level of protection provided against access to hazardous parts and the ingress of solid foreign objects.

FX Lighting’s products are all IP6X rated, which means they are Dust-Tight: No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact.

Second digit: Liquid ingress protection

The second digit indicates the level of protection that the enclosure provides against harmful ingress of water.

The ratings for water ingress are not cumulative beyond IPX6. A device that is compliant with IPX7 (covering immersion in water) is not necessarily compliant with IPX5 or IPX6 (covering exposure to water jets). A device that meets both tests is indicated by listing both tests separated by a slash, e.g. IPX5/IPX7.

What Do IP Ratings Mean for Water Resistance?

IPX6
Water projected in powerful jets against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.
IPX6K
Water projected in powerful jets against the enclosure from any direction, under elevated pressure, shall have no harmful effects.
IPX7
Ingress of water in harmful quantities shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time.
IPX8
The equipment is suitable for continuous immersion in water under conditions which shall be specified by the manufacturer.
IPX9K
Protected against close-range high pressure, high-temperature spray downs.

IP Ratings for Industrial Lighting

FX Lighting’s fixtures include IP ratings to indicate their appropriateness for the conditions in which they will be installed. The fixtures are waterproof, temperature resistant from -40 degrees to +149 degrees Fahrenheit (-40 degrees to +65 degrees Celsius) and can withstand pressure washing up to 1600 PSI.
